Found as a babe amidst the dead and dying in the wake of a great battle, raised as the beloved son of blacksmith and warrior Hagar Hammersmith, Logan always knew that he was different. And with curses and stares and sometimes with fists, the villagers of Solan Bay did their best to make sure he would never forget it.
But on that day, the day the slavers came to Solan Bay and left him for dead in a pool of his own blood, everything changed. Logan learned the truth of his existence, of his destiny. Forged in the heat of battle, tempered in blood, Logan was an instrument of change. Fuelled by rage and loss, Logan begins a journey to set things right. If setting things right means changing the world – so be it!

First off a fantasy novel with Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, and many other characters from D&D novels(Tolkien) should have its own pantheon of gods. Yes, everyone recognizes the Greek and Roman pantheons because of other better written books and from historical accounts like Hercules. Trying to mix the two is a very difficult task and was not achieved in this story. Normally I wouldn't complain about something so simple but the gods are a major part of this story and it was not carried out very well.Secondly I hated the characters! Logan(The Main Character) was nothing like he should be if created/born like he was. The Elven characters were more Human than Elven and Humans were portrayed as only a step above Goblins. I like fresh new perspectives on a race but these characters are very bland so the new perspective never caught my interest.
On the upside the world was not entirely portrayed as being dark and dismal. Even though there was rape and murder it wasn't over expressed like in some books.
I will not be looking for the rest of this series and I recommend other fantasy readers to look elsewhere for a good read.

The Hammer Fall The Chronicles of Logan Hammersmith edition by Derick JM Summers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is not the most groundbreaking fantasy novel, but it is definitely a riveting story. There were quite a few parts where I stayed up late to find out what was going to happen next.
Positive aspects
- the characters are quite originals and, for once, the protagonist is an hero in spirit more than in the apperances.
- the story was quite entertaining
Negative aspects
- the plot is a bit too predictable for my taste
- the writing style was still a bit raw
Conclusions
A good book, I think the author will gradually improve his style.
To me the true mark of success for a book is when you finish you want more - NOW. For a first foray into fantasy this was truly well written and edited. It is hard to take such an excellent story and break it down to a paragraph. You start with Hagar and Tess adopting Logan and you think, OK the usual poor little orphan boy story. Then everything changes and becomes something so much more. There are NO parts in this book that you can kind of skim over. Every scene takes you somewhere. Wonderfully Done. I look forward to more from Derick Summers.
I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyable. It isn't a classic but I'm looking forward to the next in the series. The combination of Greek Gods and an original world was handled well. The take on some traditional monsters/races was interesting as well. I strongly suspect this story had it's origin in an FRP game. Certainly GM's can find some inspiration for some novel twists within.
This book was just ok. It was an interesting plot, but pretty predictable and the language was very elementary given the graphic nature of many of the scenes. The disconnected feeling of characters during violence felt strange to me since at the same time those characters were made out to be deeply compassionate people. If this book was meant for children, it should involve less gore, if it was meant for a teenage/adult audience then I feel the vocabulary should have been more advanced. Overall the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading for some of the book, but I started just scanning to get to the end about 1/2 way through due to the simpleness of the language and the ease with which the 'hero' completed everything.
I hate giving up on a book I spent money on, but this one just wasn't worth the effort. I managed a little under half before finally calling it quits, realizing that it just wasn't going to improve. The first couple of chapters seemed decent, the main character and his family having the potential of carrying a story, but it didn't last. Tragedy strikes, a loved one stolen, and a mighty quest begun, except when the main character meets a pretty girl, spends some time at a party, forgets the urgency of saving a loved one, and basically becomes a total twit.
I hate to seem completely negative, but the book is so poorly written, it just isn't redeemable.
This book is not meant for adult readers by simple virtue of it's reading level. It's fairly well built as far as books go except that it's entirely built with thrice recycled materials. A well constructed hut you could say.
The hero is probably the single most interesting point. All other characters behave in a very strange way, unrealistic, way. Their actions are almost robotic and 2 dimensional. The conversations feel forced and childlike in their complexity.
The story actually manages to get lost in itself and one could almost forget the overall plot at times.
One hopes that this author finds a muse as I would enjoy his writing more if it had a bit more creativity and character depth.
