The Road to Memphis Mildred D Taylor Books

Although The Road to Memphis is the last chapter, chronologically speaking, of the Logans family saga that comprises three other novels and several short stories, you don't have to read other books in the series to 'get' it, as it's pretty self-contained. The novel is set in 1941 (i.e. during the WWII and well before the civil rights era) and depicts the life of a black family in the American South.

I've seen The Road to Memphis advertised as adventure book for children ("age 10 and up"), but I'm not sure it can be classified as such. I mean, the earlier novels pulled no punches in describing racism, unfairness and inequality perpetuated by Jim Crow laws (as well as bravery and ingenuity with which black folks combat them), but this one is even darker. At 17, Cassie, the main protagonist and narrator of the novel, is not a teenage girl anymore but a young woman, and the themes discussed here touch on wide range on 'adult' themes: from teenage pregnancy to the possibility of sexual violence at the hands of white people. The trip to Memphis that Cassie and her brothers undertake to save their friend from imprisonment is probably the most gripping, adrenaline-filled sequence written by Taylor, but it also showcases some of the worst traits of segregation era. The scene at the truck stop is horrific and heartbreaking at the same time (you'll see). Don't get me wrong, this stuff should probably be the required reading at school, but do we really want to label it 'adventure'?

The book is not all dread and despair, though. I've really enjoyed watching Cassie becoming an independently-thinking young woman, being involved in a romantic relationship and learning firsthand that the world outside her home state can be pretty different and maybe, just maybe, more tolerant of black folks. As usual, the ending is bittersweet – with the firm emphasis on bitter – but somehow conveying optimism and hope for better days. Definitely recommended.

The Road to Memphis Mildred D Taylor Books Reviews

It was great to see the characters grow into young adults, still trying to navigate their way through a still very racist Mississippi.
Wonderful reading great y quick read
It was a good book, but I just wish that we would've got to find out how Moe ended up, or about Stacey and the war. I also wanted to know who Cassie was going to end up with.
This book is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed her books since I was first introduced to them in middle school. I wish she would write one more story because this book is kind of a cliffhanger.
😃
I read this book for the first time when I was eleven or twelve years old and fell in love with it. I had read the first two books and others in the series so I knew I'd like this one. It turned out to be my favorite book of the series. This would go on my all time favorite. I would recommend that all children read it to learn about their history in a fun way.
Mildred Taylor's books should be in every home. They show life as it was for black folks in the early part of the 20th century. Jim Crow laws and the hopeless situations of so many is something we all need to know about. This is one book of a series, and one--ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY--won a Newbery Medal, a well-deserved honor. All of these books are for older young people because they are intense. These books were not written to entertain, though they are highly interesting, but they are written, I think, to help people know what life was like before the Civil Rights movement. This book is the final one of the series.
