Where to begin? Ok, so there are MANY problematic issues in this book that can turn a reader away: rape, violence against women, slavery, sexism. This story is NOT for the faint of heart. I myself nearly didn't finish it because I couldn't fathom anyone being alright with these situations, but there were SO MANY 5 star reviews, I thought, "Surely the story itself is great." So I pushed on until I finished reading. Needless to say, I could've gone without reading this book. Circe's best friend/ interpreter had a saying (and I wanted to strangle her each time she voiced it) was, "It is there way." Oh so since it's their way, it's ok for them to kidnap me, rape me, smack me around, refuse to listen to my concerns etc. Yeah cool....NOT!Since there were so many things wrong with this book, I figured I'd detail it below, so that other readers could at least have a heads up about it and decide from there. I wish I had paid attention to the lower ratings before picking up this book.
To break it down, Circe is from present time Earth, gets sucked into parallel universe, awakens in a savage and primitive land (which by the way she doesn't speak their language), and then it begins.
1. Wife Hunt: sounds exactly what it means. The warriors hunt their wives. First the women are kidnapped from wherever or sometimes chosen from the Korwahk group because of their beauty. They are paraded through town, then set loose, the warriors hunt them down and sometimes fight against their brothers, and once winning, they claim the woman. What's claiming? RAPE! They rape the woman and they are now married. WTF?! NOT OK!
2. Within the first 17 pages (I believe it was 17), Circe gets raped. Then now that she's "married" her husband (King Lahn) proceeds to rape her for 3 days. He then forcefully seduces her, and since he brought her to climax, Circe starts to show affection to him since he's being "sweet". Seriously?! Can you say Stockholm Syndrome?!
3. Circe is constantly forgiving Lahn because "It is their way" for whatever negative thing he/warriors do.
4. I get that Circe needs to adjust and adapt to her new life living with the savage, primitive warriors, but I think she adjusted a smidgen TOO quickly. "Oh, I was kidnapped and raped, but look! These clothes and jewelry are AMAZING! My husband gives me orgasms!" So that makes your situation better. Gotcha. *rolls eyes*
5. They all see a fellow warrior wife being abused repeatedly. The wife finally has enough and defends herself. Good for her, right? WRONG! She is sentenced to death because it is against the law to draw steel against the warriors/husbands.
6. Circe (and ALL women) have no say in anything. They are just expected to follow their man's rule, spread their legs for the husbands, provide young, and be ok with ALL Korwahk ways. Anytime Circe speaks her mind against something she sees as wrong, you guessed it...it is their way and she needs to learn to accept that. AND SHE DOES!
7. Lahn (the king and Circe's husband) has all the power to change what's wrong with his culture, but since it's been like this for forever, he doesn't. Not once during all the times Circe had to endure things she hasn't seen/done before, does he apologize for his actions to her....because it is their way. He saw no wrong in backhanding her because he was "worried" for her safety. That's some way to show your worry! He's a bit too possessive, demanding, forceful, and sure he has his "sweet" moments like giving her a horse (oh but wait! That's more out of guilt because he had just backhanded her the previous night), and whispers nice things to her and starts to learn her language. He never apologizes for raping her (even after she explained how it's not ok), told her it was an honor and he'd cherish it (basically, can't recall the exact words). GAH!
8. After EVERYTHING she's endured throughout the whole book, SHE apologizes to HIM (mind you, he's never apologized to her for anything he did to her)!!!! She felt bad/guilty that she dragged out her forgiving him for ALL the crap she had to suffer through, and it was hurting HIM! F***ing shoot me now!
So besides those issues, the other thing I got so freaking tired of was flipping back and forth between my page (because the foreign language was spoken) and the back dictionary. I mean, put the sentence/word/phrase in parenthesis or something! Thank goodness an interpreter finally showed up and Lahn and Circe QUICKLY learned the other's language!
OH! I also felt this was VERY similar to Game of Thrones Drogo/Daenarys. But perhaps that's just me.
Ok, I think I'm done with this review. I rated it a 2 instead of a 1 because I have to say the book made me FEEL. I'm not sure I'll continue the series though because frankly, if ALL the males in this series are going to be sexist, misogynistic, douchecanoes, and ALL the women are just going to willingly accept that, then I just don't know if I can handle reading more of it. I had liked the idea of the parallel universe and it being fantasy, but this book just didn't cut it for me. Perhaps it will be to your liking (the reader reading this review).

The Golden Dynasty Fantasyland Series Book 2 edition by Kristen Ashley Romance eBooks Reviews
I'm writing this from the view is a woman who has experienced domestic violence. The book is well written and it draws you into it and it's very hard to put down. I have read book 3 and 1 before reading this book and it can easily be read as a standalone. The other two heros in those stories tip toe the edge of an abusive relationship but it was minor enough that I could try to look past it. That being said, the Dax is a cruel, abusive man and the heroine, after grumbling, accepts it as her due. Dax rapes her repeatedly, but he liked it so it's OK. He hits her across the face and leaves a deep bruise. She ignores him for a bit and then all is well. He's controlling and orders her about like she is a slave herself. All this the heroine takes in stride. Abuse and rape are widely accepted from a modern day woman. To be honest this story scewed with my head a little. I'm working hard on dealing with what I went through and this book can make a person rethink things, like maybe if he loves me, it's OK. IT IS NOT OK. Seriously, if you've ever been a victim of abuse, I do not recommend this book.
I have been such a fan of KA... Read every book I came across and couldn't wait for the next. Then came the Fantasyland series. Fantasy is not my usual cup of tea but, because it was KA, I decided to give it a try. Wildest Dreams was great. Lots of action, love, and adventure. Then I bought Golden Dynasty.
To say that I am disappointed is such an understatement. No amount of apology or romance can erase the fact that this "relationship" begins with a rape. You cannot turn that into a HEA no matter how you convolute things. All I could think about was the rapes that have occurred in our country lately and the rapists who have walked away virtually unpunished. Are we to believe that, maybe some day, they will meet up with their victims who will fall madly in love with them and forgive all, riding off into the sunset?
I was never a romance novel fan until my marriage fell apart and I decided to see if I could believe again. This book made me sad, made me angry, and made me rethink reading any more from this author.
