If you like classic romantic suspense, you'll enjoy this book, but only if you like your books heavier on the romance than the suspense. The sexual tension between Jack and Fiona is steamy, although I have to say their relationship confused me at times. Neither could seem to make up their mind what they wanted, then all of sudden, she's in love with him and he's freaking out about it. And honestly, although I fell a little in love with Jack myself, I didn't like Fiona very much. Especially the stupid decisions she made at the end of the book, and she deserved to get hurt because of those choices. The suspense plot took a back seat to the romance, and seemed a bit disorganized to me. There just seemed to be a lot of "clutter" in this book with too many characters and too much going on at times. And there was never really an explanation of why the bad guys were doing what they were doing. Things were just hinted at. I gave it 4 stars strictly because I enjoyed the relationship aspect so much. The plot, I'd give 3 stars to. And is it just me----I'm getting tired of this author making us think there's going to be a relationship between 2 characters, but there never is. This book was written in a way to lead us to think Courtney and Nathan would have a thing, but book #2 is her story and the male lead isn't Nathan. It's just annoying to me.Tags : Thread of Fear [Laura Griffin] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Great read! I really enjoyed my first read by this author and will definitely be continuing with the 2nd book in The Glass Sisters series. Thread of Fear is an intense, tightly woven suspense book with just the right touch of romance, angst, and mystery. I was surprised to learn the identity of one of the villains revealed near the end as I never saw it coming. Thread of Fear is a well written, heart-touching read. A Must Read!
STORY BRIEF
Fiona is an artist who draws pictures of criminals by interviewing victims and witnesses. The FBI uses her as much as possible because she is better than anyone else - she has a psychic intuition for this. She teaches college art classes and is painting pictures for a first gallery showing. She wants to stop working on FBI cases because they take tremendous energy and haunt her. But when she hears about new victims, she can't say no, she needs to help. Jack is a police chief in a small Texas town. He has a hunch that a recent local murder is linked to another attempted murder from 11 years earlier. He talks Fiona into helping him by interviewing Lucy, the victim from 11 years earlier and drawing a picture of Lucy's attacker. Fiona senses a relationship between Lucy and Jack. Most of the book is about the serial killer Jack is after. A lesser amount of time is spent with the FBI hunting another serial killer Fiona helped with.
REVIEWER'S OPINION
Many mysteries spend too much time on the mystery and not enough time developing a romantic relationship for me. But not so here. I loved the time spent developing the relationship, which was not predictable. My one complaint is that I wanted an epilogue to clarify who the bad guys were, why they did what they did, and how and why two of them were connected with each other. I also wanted to know what sentencing/jail time would happen. But even though I didn't get all my answers, it was still a great way to spend my time.

OTHER BOOKS
Laura's books can be read as stand alones, but I recommend reading book 1 before 2, and reading book 3 before 4. Characters and events are introduced in books 1 and 3 which continue into the sequels. Besides, I think books 1 and 3 were slightly better than their sequels.

CAUTION MINOR SPOILERS
One of the conversations intrigued me about the characters - when Jack lied to Fiona. She left him because of the lie. But she took him back again. I liked the following (edited). Fiona asks Jack "Do you know what she's talking about? Don't lie." Jack says "No idea. I wouldn't lie to you." Her eyebrows arched. "Going forward," he clarified. "I won't lie to you." Shoot, now what had he done? He'd just made a promise that would be hell to keep. Not that it mattered. She could tell when he was lying anyway.
The ending was not typical with one saying I love you and the other saying it back. In this story, one said it earlier, the other never said it, but at the end clearly showed it with some neat actions. It was different, a twist.
This was a good story, not terribly graphic which I appreciated. I can imagine it's hard to do a story about rape victims without being graphic but that's what this author did. It's heavy subject matter and while he didn't take it lightly, he didn't make it a sick obsession either. I was proud of what the author was able to do because I'm sure it wasn't easy to specifically NOT describe things but at the same time be descriptive enough to be a storyteller. Impressive, really.
I took off a star because there were some odd parts that I'm confused about...
1. At one point in the beginning the main character gets a piece of hate mail. She send it to her friend (a cop) to look into. I don't recall it coming up ever again. I thought it would swing back into the story later with one of her cases or something since the cop was a recurring character, but unless I missed it, the letter turned out to not be relevant. The author made big enough of a deal of the hate mail and the characters reaction that I was expecting it to resurface later but it didn't.
2. The main male character. I understand that this is partly a romance book. I also understand that some romance readers/authors like male characters that are that manly, "take charge", kinda alpha male. Got it. I'm not sure it was a good idea, given the subject matter, making this main male character that sexually...what's the word....dominant? aggressive? Either way, I occasionally expected HIM to the be rapist because it felt sometimes like he had a little bit of that in him. Just not sure it was a good paring, that character and the bad guy plot line. It made me slightly uncomfortable, but maybe more seasoned romance readers will find that more normal than I. This is my first book that is considered (by anyway) to be in the romance category so I could be off base on this one.
3. The third person perspective was off in that the point of view was confusing. This author would detail the internal thoughts of the characters in such a way that I felt like the narrator was switching back and forth between characters, but wasn't the typical "all knowing" narrator. It was like the 3rd person narrator wasn't omnipotent and therefore, had to ask internal questions from the male, that the female already answered earlier, also in the narrator's voice. (Does that make sense?) The way the internal dialogue was written was just clunky at times because you had to remind yourself that you know the answer to what the male is thinking because the female already "told you", ALSO from the narrator's perspective. I'm clearly not an literature major, so I'm not sure how to describe this exactly, but it the first time I've ever had to remind myself of where in space/time I, the reader, am residing and who is doing the "talking". And not just once even, it was actually a common problem I had.
All in all, it was a good read and I did like Fiona a lot. I found I had a lot in common with her, personality-wise, so I immediately understood her. I would read more if the "Fiona Glass" character becomes a series. (Not so interested in the sister.)
